Member of the Communist Party of China, famous cell biologist and developmental biologist, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, member of the 5th and 6th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and researcher of the Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shi Luji was ineffective due to illness. Sadly passed away at Shanghai Huadong Hospital at 12:06 on December 14, 2010 at the age of 94.
Shi Luji was born on November 26, 1917 in Yizheng, Jiangsu. In 1935, he was admitted to the Department of Horticulture, Zhejiang University. After realizing the importance of the "eating problem" to China at that time, he changed his major from horticulture to breeding. In 1941, he was admitted to the Institute of Science, Zhejiang University, where he studied cytogenetics under the tutelage of Professor Tan Jiazhen. In 1946, he went to the Graduate School of Columbia University to engage in maize cytogenetics research. Later, based on his interest in genetics, cells and ontogeny, he transferred to the animal department to engage in cell and cell chemistry research, and received his Ph.D. in 1951.
